It is 2:47 in the morning in a corridor of Shinjuku Station. The fluorescent lights are as bright as noon. A man in a suit is asleep standing up against the wall, his briefcase placed between his shoes. Three metres away, a woman in a hotel uniform is bent over a smartphone, eyes wide open. The ramen shop across the way has been full for an hour — the queue has simply reformed with new people. Tokyo at 3am looks like other cities at 3pm. This is not a metaphor. It is the most ordinary reality of the most populated city on earth. And it is at precisely this moment — in this corridor, with this quiet intensity — that you understand why Tokyo is unlike any other city. It is proof that a society can function at a scale and with a precision that one would not have thought possible.

Tokyo, the impossible city

Tokyo is the world's largest urban agglomeration, with 37 million people in the broader metropolitan area. The city of Tokyo itself — the 23 ku (wards) plus the western municipalities — holds 14 million people across 2,194 km². Day-to-day life in reality

Housing in Tokyo is less expensive than the city's reputation suggests — partly because the weak yen of 2023–2026 has dramatically lowered costs in foreign currencies, and partly because Japan's rental market is structurally different from Western markets.
