🧭 Overview
Turkmenistan is Central Asian nation known as one of world's most isolated, authoritarian states (North Korea of Central Asia) ruled by personality cult dictators: Saparmurat Niyazov 'Turkmenbashi' (1991-2006, renamed months after himself/mother, built golden statues, wrote Ruhnama spiritual book mandatory study) and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow (2006-22, son Serdar 2022-present, dynastic succession). Ashgabat is capital (white marble city, Guinness record for most white marble buildings). The country offers natural gas wealth (4th-largest reserves globally), Darvaza Gas Crater ('Door to Hell' — burning crater since 1971), and Karakum Desert but suffers from totalitarianism (no freedoms, total surveillance), economic crisis (despite gas wealth), isolation (difficult visas), and bizarre personality cults. Economy is natural gas (state-controlled, exports to China).

👥 People & vibe
With roughly 6.4 million people (data unreliable — government controls information), Turkmenistan is ethnically Turkmen (~85%), Uzbek (~5%), Russian (~4%, declining). Turkmen is official; Russian is spoken. Islam (Sunni, ~89%) exists but state controls religion. The culture is nomadic heritage (yurts, carpets, horses — Akhal-Teke breed is pride), heavily overlaid by authoritarian propaganda. Turkmens are hospitable but fearful (surveillance, informers). The vibe is Truman Show meets Soviet absurdity. Ashgabat is white marble ghost town; rural areas are traditional but isolated. People can't speak freely.

🌦️ Climate & landscape
Expect desert continental climate: extreme heat in summer (40-50°C), cold winters (-5 to 5°C). The landscape is 80% Karakum Desert, Darvaza Gas Crater (Door to Hell — 70m wide burning crater, tourists visit at night), Caspian Sea coast, Kopet Dag Mountains (border with Iran), and Yangykala Canyon. Natural beauty is harsh, dramatic, inaccessible. Air quality varies.

🏠 Housing & settling in
Foreigners cannot freely live in Turkmenistan. Gas company workers, diplomats stay in guarded compounds in Ashgabat. Expect controlled housing. Quality is surreal — Ashgabat has white marble buildings (Guinness record), golden statues (Niyazov, Berdimuhamedow), empty (few people on streets). Surveillance is total. Outside Ashgabat, foreigners cannot go without permits/guides. Movement is controlled.

💼 Work & economy
The economy is natural gas-dominated (4th-largest reserves globally, exports to China via pipeline). State controls everything. For foreigners, only gas companies (Chinese, others), diplomats, or rare NGOs work here. Normal work doesn't exist. Economy is opaque — official data is propaganda. Currency controls, shortages (despite gas wealth), unemployment (hidden). Natural gas revenues enrich regime, fund white marble vanity projects, don't reach people.

🛂 Visa & entry
Tourist visas are extremely difficult (government controls tourism, requires guides, restricted itineraries, $300+/day mandatory spending on government hotels/guides). Transit visas (5 days) are easier. Entry is controlled. Exit can be denied. For work, gas company sponsorship or diplomatic status only. Permanent residence impossible for foreigners. Citizenship is unimaginable. DO NOT GO unless absolutely necessary (gas work, diplomacy) or organized tour (expensive, controlled, Orwellian).

🏥 Healthcare
Healthcare is state-run and poor quality. Ashgabat hospitals exist but quality is Soviet-era or worse. COVID-19 was denied to exist (government refused to acknowledge pandemic — 'no cases' despite clear evidence). Serious conditions require evacuation to Turkey, Russia, or beyond. Life expectancy data is unreliable (government controls statistics). International health insurance with evacuation essential but evacuation can be difficult (government controls exit).

🚗 Transport & mobility
Ashgabat has few cars (white cars preferred — Berdimuhamedow's obsession; other colors discouraged). Public transport exists but limited. Movement outside capital requires permits, guides. The country is large but foreigners can't travel freely. Ashgabat Airport connects to Istanbul, Dubai, Moscow (limited flights). Domestic flights exist but foreigners need permits. Driving is not feasible for foreigners (no freedom of movement).

🍛 Food note (national dish)
The national dish is Plov
(Pilaf): rice with meat (lamb), carrots, onions, cooked in fat. Eaten communally. Alternatively, Shashlik
(grilled meat skewers) or Manty
(steamed dumplings). Turkmen cuisine is Central Asian — rice, meat, bread, influenced by Persian, Russian, nomadic traditions.

🔎 Bottom line
Turkmenistan is NOT FOR ANYONE except gas industry workers or diplomats (unavoidable assignments). It's one of world's most totalitarian, isolated, bizarre states. Niyazov 'Turkmenbashi' (1991-2006) created personality cult: renamed months (April = Gurbansoltan after his mother), days of week considered, banned beards/gold teeth/opera/ballet, built golden rotating statue of himself, wrote Ruhnama (spiritual book combining history/poetry/bizarre decrees — mandatory study, tested for jobs/driving licenses). Berdimuhamedow (2006-22) continued: loves horses (built golden horse statue, performs tricks on horses broadcast on TV, banned black cars 2018), dentist obsession (gold dental equipment), vanity projects (Ashgabat white marble city, world records for fountains/flagpoles/Ferris wheels). 2022: dynastic succession to son Serdar (rigged election). NO political freedoms, total surveillance, internet is controlled/censored, no independent media, arrests for dissent, exit can be denied. Gas wealth ($40B+ reserves) doesn't reach people — vanity projects, corruption, mismanagement. DO NOT GO unless absolutely unavoidable. If you must (gas job), accept Orwellian nightmare, total surveillance, bizarre cult propaganda, isolation. The absurdity is profound but not funny when you're trapped there.
